From Frisco City on the railroad to 235,000 residents
The Texas State Historical Association's Handbook of Texas places Frisco on State Highway 289 and Farm Road 720, about thirty miles north of Dallas in western Collin County, with a portion in eastern Denton County. The town was first called Emerson. When its post office opened in 1902 it was renamed Frisco City for the St. Louis, San Francisco and Texas Railway, popularly known as the Frisco system.
The Handbook counts 618 residents in 1930, 6,141 in 1990 and 33,714 in 2000. The Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey one-year estimate is 235,221. The city's own demographics page lists its area as 69.1 square miles.
The Dallas North Tollway, from Gaylord Parkway to US 380 and into Prosper
NTTA describes the Dallas North Tollway as a 33-mile road through Dallas, Highland Park, University Park, Addison, Farmers Branch, Plano, Frisco and Prosper. Its first section opened in June 1968. NTTA says a 1.5-mile extension opened in 2004 up to Gaylord Parkway in Frisco, an extension to US 380 followed in September 2007, and bridges carrying the tollway over US 380 into Prosper opened in 2023.
The City of Frisco says NTTA added a fourth lane in each direction between SH 121 and US 380, rebuilt the bridge at Fields Parkway and widened that stretch of the tollway to eight lanes.
A cowboy campus, a golf headquarters and two campuses for higher education
The Star's website describes it as the 91-acre campus of the Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters and practice facility, developed as a partnership between the City of Frisco and Frisco ISD. The City of Frisco says the PGA of America headquarters officially opened in August 2022 and anchors a 600-acre mixed-use development.
Collin College says its Frisco Campus, near Preston Road and Wade Boulevard, serves about 17,000 students. UNT says its Frisco Landing building at UNT at Frisco is 135,000 square feet and sits at the southwest corner of Preston Road and Panther Creek Parkway. Before booking a visit at any of these places, ask the property owner or campus manager whether vehicle service or detailing is allowed in the lot.
At least ten feet on the narrowest streets, and no speed humps on public streets
The city's neighborhood traffic FAQ says residential streets are a compromise between parking, emergency access and slow speeds. It says the narrowest residential streets are wide enough for cars parked on both sides with a minimum of 10 feet left between them. The FAQ gives passenger cars as 6 feet wide and fire trucks as 8 feet wide, and the city says residential streets are not meant to guarantee two-way traffic at the same time. It also says Frisco does not allow speed humps on public streets, citing among other reasons that they hinder emergency vehicles, and does not install stop signs to control speed.
The Common Violations page says guests who visit from outside Collin or Denton counties may request a Visitor On-Street Parking Permit from the Police Department for a temporary period not to exceed five days. The permit is for out-of-county guests, and the city's page does not mention repair or detailing visits. If a job would put a vehicle or equipment on the street, confirm with the city or your HOA first.
What Frisco's severe weather page says about a car left outside
Frisco's severe weather page says the city will activate its Outdoor Warning Sirens when severe weather, such as hail of 1.5 inches or larger, winds of 70 mph or greater or a tornado, threatens the community. Separately, it says hail dime size or larger can dent the tops of vehicles, and it advises moving vehicles into garages if time permits.
For a tornado, the same page says people should get out of vehicles immediately and seek shelter in a building if time permits, or move to a ditch or culvert away from the vehicle, and should never try to outrun a tornado. These are the city's instructions, not Tim's.
More than 200 HOAs in one city
The city says Frisco has more than 200 HOAs, and it runs a Five Star Neighborhood Program that recognizes HOAs that take pride in their communities. Its code enforcement FAQ says many subdivisions have HOAs and points residents to the Neighborhood Services page to see whether theirs has one with a property management company.
Before a repair in your driveway or a detailing visit, ask your association what it allows on driveways and curbs, and get the answer in writing if you can.
